ITCA Holds First-Ever Prom
When you think of virtual school events, an in-person formal dance isn’t one that typically comes to mind. But for Idaho Technical Career Academy (ITCA) students, that changed on May 20, 2026, when the school held its first-ever prom in collaboration with Idaho Virtual Academy at Northwest Nazarene University’s Brandt Center in Nampa.
A Student-Led Vision
Sean, a senior at ITCA, helped found the school’s student council during his junior year, and prom was one of the very first things he pushed for. Although it didn’t come together, the student council returned to it this school year and made it happen.
For Sean, the reason was simple. He had never been to a prom himself, and he knew many of his classmates hadn’t either. “I thought to myself, ‘Isn’t prom supposed to be a milestone event for us?’” he said. “Enough of us agreed on that question that we decided to pursue it.”

An Event for Students, Built by Students
The student council took the lead on planning—venue, catering, entertainment, and ticket sales—with steady support from advisors and the admin team. When the event grew into a partnership with IDVA, administrators from both schools coordinated the final pieces, bringing the event to life.
The result reflects something ITCA believes deeply: Students thrive when they’re given room to lead. The school’s clubs and activities, including student council, exist to give every ITCA student a place to take initiative, build skills and shape the experiences that matter to them—and prom is exactly the kind of experience that makes the case.

What a Virtual Community Looks Like in Real Life
Sean recognizes the misconceptions held by those unfamiliar with virtual schools, who imagine students sitting alone at a computer, not engaging with each other. But he knows, first-hand, it’s a much different experience.
“I’ve found that our community is stronger than that of brick-and-mortar [school]; not because we are around each other every day, but because we make the intentional choice to connect with our peers, to reach out, to bridge that gap,” he said. “Being able to have students from these schools come together and show up for this event was, in my mind, a testament to that community.”
That spirit was unmistakable on the dance floor. Students from both schools treated the room like one shared community. As Sean put it, “It was such an overwhelmingly friendly and welcoming environment to be in that you felt as if you were friends with every student there, even if they weren’t from your school or you only knew them by name.”
“It was really much more than an event,” he said. “It was proof that our virtual community is very much real.”

We couldn’t be prouder of the ITCA students and staff who helped make “Prom 2026: An Evening of Elegance” possible. A huge thank-you to all the ITCA and IDVA students, staff, and families who contributed to the successful evening.
