Game Created by ITCA Principal Eric Olsen Nominated for Toy of the Year

At Idaho Technical Career Academy (ITCA), innovation and creativity are at the core of our virtual classrooms. Our principal and math teacher, Eric Olsen, exemplifies this spirit by bringing learning to life in exciting ways. His latest achievement is Flip 7, a card game he created that has been nominated for the prestigious 2025 Toy of the Year (TOTY) Award.
A Game Born from Passion and Perseverance
Flip 7 isn’t just a fun family game — it’s a testament to the power of creativity and dedication. Inspired by classic blackjack, Flip 7 incorporates exciting twists with special cards like “freeze” and “flip three,” making it a fast-paced and engaging game for players aged eight and up.
Eric began developing Flip 7 over three years ago, starting with a simple prototype that he tested with his son, friends and family. After refining the game based on their feedback, he licensed it to USAOPOLY, a major name in the gaming industry. Today, you can find Flip 7 on Amazon and in various retail stores.
But this isn’t Eric’s first foray into game design. In addition to Flip 7, he’s created several other games, including Glyphics, Booty Dice, A Lotta Axolotls and French Goats in Trench Coats. His passion for game design is infectious and integrates the lessons he’s learned into his teaching, providing students with valuable insights into entrepreneurship, goal-setting and the creative process.
“I like to tell students — and show them — that they can start from scratch and be successful,” Eric said. “The sky is the limit. They can do anything.”
