From Virtual Classroom to Valedictorian: Kya’s Success Story at Idaho Technical Career Academy

In the picturesque town of Burley, Idaho, a remarkable story of academic achievement and career preparation has unfolded. Kya M., the 2024 valedictorian of Idaho Technical Career Academy (ITCA), charted an unconventional path to success. Kya’s journey shows how virtual learning can open doors to unique opportunities, enabling students to balance their education with real-world experience and personal passions.
Kya’s decision to switch from Idaho Virtual Academy to ITCA was driven by her goal to become a pharmaceutical technician. ITCA’s specialized pharmacy technician program offered her the perfect blend of academic rigor and practical skills training. This career-focused approach is at the heart of ITCA’s mission, equipping students in grades 9-12 with personalized education that prepares them for the workforce or higher education.
The flexibility of ITCA’s virtual platform was a game-changer for Kya. Unlike brick-and-mortal school schedules, her days were a dynamic mix of online classes, internship hours at Walgreens and time with family. “You can travel back and forth and hang out with your family whenever you want to,” she said. “I feel like when you’re attending virtual school, it doesn’t take all day.” This flexibility allowed her to pursue her love for dog breeding and spend time with her family residing in Burley and Island Park – opportunities that would have been difficult to manage in a brick-and-mortar school setting.
Kya’s academic achievement within this flexible framework is perhaps the most impressive part of her story. As valedictorian, she proved that virtual learning can lead to exceptional results when paired with dedication and the right support system. Through ITCA’s Dual Enrollment program, Kya earned 60 college credits toward a liberal arts associate degree from the University of Western Idaho, giving her a substantial head start on her higher education journey.
Her internship at Walgreens in Burley provided hands-on experience in pharmacy operations, from filling prescriptions to understanding the intricacies of medication management. “I went there once a week to learn how to fill medications and prescriptions and handle freight. [I] learned more about what a pharmacist’s job is,” she shared. This practical experience proved invaluable, providing a solid foundation for her future career in pharmacy.
Now, just months after graduation, Kya is attending Arizona State University virtually, completing her prerequisites before entering the pharmacy program. Her story illustrates the power of career-focused, flexible education models like ITCA. For families in Idaho seeking an educational approach that combines academic excellence with real-world preparation, Kya’s journey is a shining example of what’s possible.
