In the realm of high school athletics and academic achievement, few stories shine as brightly as that of Kathryn Burnette. A senior at Idaho Technical Career Academy (ITCA), Kathryn has not only excelled in her studies but also made waves in the world of shot put, showcasing the unique opportunities available to students at this innovative online school.

Kathryn’s journey with ITCA began in her freshman year when she and her family sought a more flexible educational option that would allow her to pursue her passion for athletics while maintaining academic excellence. ITCA’s personalized approach to education proved to be the perfect fit, offering Kathryn the ability to balance her rigorous training schedule with a challenging curriculum tailored to her career aspirations.

Kathryn’s dedication to both her studies and athletics has paid off in remarkable ways. In May 2024, she broke the Potlatch School District’s record for girls’ shot put with an impressive throw of 42 feet, 8.5 inches, a personal best that also surpassed her mother’s long-standing shot put record of 36 feet, 3 inches from Lynden High School in Washington. This achievement not only solidified her position as a top athlete in the state but also caught the attention of college recruiters nationwide. Kathryn’s success in shot put is a testament to her hard work and the support she received from ITCA, which allowed her to pursue her athletic goals without compromising her education.

Academically, Kathryn has thrived at ITCA, taking advantage of the school’s dual credit pathways to get a head start on her college education, focusing on anatomy and physical education. Kathryn credits ITCA’s career-focused curriculum and supportive teachers for helping her discover and pursue her passion, specifically Abigail Heikes, who leads engaging agriculture, plant and animal science courses at the school.

The flexibility and support Kathryn has received at ITCA has been instrumental in her success both on and off the field, allowing her to be challenged academically while still having time to train and compete at a high level in shot put. The skills she’s gained through FFA and her coursework are also preparing her for college and beyond.

For Idaho families looking to provide their high school students with a personalized education that prepares them for future success, Kathryn Burnette’s story serves as an inspiring example of what’s possible at Idaho Technical Career Academy. With its focus on career preparation, dual credit opportunities and individualized learning plans, ITCA empowers students to pursue their passions and achieve their goals.
